Partially Sandblasted Volcano
The Volcano is a shape that Davide Iafisco has considerable experience with and anytime the Italian artisan crafts one, it's bound to be an impressive composition that reflects his creativity and ambitious style. This interpretation maintains the shape's characteristic tapering bowl, broad base, and firm, demarcating ridgeline encircling the base, but Davide has reinterpreted the form utilizing his own creative brilliance. The majority of the underside has been treated to a low-profile sandblast, adding textural diversity to an otherwise smooth-polished piece. I'm particularly taken by the two small kisses of plateau that are oriented along the smooth area along the right side, a skillful accenting touch that offers additional texture and imbues the design with organicism.
Above the form's signature demarcating ridgeline, a stunning array of flame grain engulfs the bowl and flows upward in concert the bowl's natural taper. The bowl's lower fore juts outward, making the bowl's forward cant more dramatically pronounced and adding dynamism to the overall profile. I also admire the choice to chamfer the inner rim as it complements the crispness of the base's ridgeline and also makes packing a bowl even easier. The transition slopes downward from the bowl's aft before curling again to meet the shank face which is triangular in shaping and also sandblasted. The expansion disc along the stem base mirrors the brass inset ring along the shank face, offering some negative space that directs attention toward the stummel for endless admiration.
