Jerry Zenn

Smooth Acorn with Horn (18)

$2,400 SGD

Taiwanese carver Jerry Zenn was influenced in his early carving career by both the Danish and Japanese schools of pipe making, as may be seen in the curvaceous lines and sumptuous curvature of this Acorn. In a subdued crimson stain that subtly highlights the grain, this piece offers a broad dome of a rim that drifts effortlessly into the flanks, which descend to the Acorn heel and terminate in a succinct point.

A long shank extension of well-grained, dark horn expands to the shank-end, where the stem is introduced with a single expansion ring before flattening to a whisper of bend. The precise and well-defined transition helps accentuate the cheeking of the bowl, and that element promotes the well-rounded character that expands upward in the organic arc that promotes the voluptuous shaping that is representative not only of the shape but of Zenn's style in executing natural forms such as this.
