A glossy and brightly colored, hand molded kogo or tea ceremony incense box. The little incense box is in the shape of a tiger and was made to celebrate the Year of the Tiger. It also makes a great ornament for those born in the year of the TIger.
Circa 1980s.
It is modelled on a paper mache toy tiger, with a nodding head (Shino no Tora); a local folk craft toy of Osaka.
The incense box is a type of Kyo ware called Yasaka yaki. It is in great condition with no cracks or chips. The kogo is signed by the artist, Kawasaki Waraku, on the under side and comes in it’s original wooden storage box which is also signed by the artist.
Kogo are beautiful little miniatures representing many aspects of traditional Japanese life, customs and seasonal events and as such make lovely, meaningful collection pieces.
