The rabbit has so much varied meaning in Zapotec (and other indigenous Oaxacan) culture.
When a person was born, and their father circled the house with mezcal and lime, one of the footprints he would be looking for in the morning in the circle of lime and mezcal was the rabbit's. If the rabbit's footprint was most evident, then his child would share a spiritual connection with the rabbit for all of its life.
The rabbit is also known as the symbol of the moon. In the way that many of us have been taught to look for the "man in the moon" in the patterns of the full moon's craters since we were little, Zapotecs and Mayans saw a "rabbit in the moon". The Zapotecs, the Mayans, and the Aztecs all associated rabbits with fertility or with their fertility gods either directly or indirectly, and the Mayan Moon goddess is often depicted holding a rabbit.
