This is a true collector's item, vintage 1950s batik tulis by artist Tjoa Siang Gwan.
Authentic Three Kingdom batik, which creation process involved dyeing that had to be done in 3 separate regions in Indonesia.
This batik is a special green tiga negeri batik style with the "Sekar jagad" motif, which literal translation is "universe of flowers". "Sekar jagad” comes from Dutch word "kar" which means map and Javanese word “ jagad” which means universe/world. Traditionally this type of batik motif is drawn one section at a time, hence making it similar to map drawing process. But the word "sekar jagad" can also be literally translated as universe of flowers.
Each section of the "sekar jagad" batik also may contain different design. Each section has a different extremely intricate background filling motif. "Sekar Jagad" batik symbolizes beauty and unity in diversity. It has a very similar meaning as United State's official motto, "E Pluribus Unum" and "Bhinneka Tunggal Ika" which is the official motto of Indonesia derived from ancient Javanese language.
Made in “Pagi Sore” style or Morning Evening style where it is as though an imaginary line had been drawn across the textile and each side of the slanting line has a totally different motif drawn on it. The result is that one batik has two styles which makes it as good as having two batiks in one.
